Our
History
Our History
The Garífuna people are descendants of West African, Arawak, and Carib ancestry, whose culture and traditions have thrived for centuries along the coasts of Central America and beyond. Rooted in resilience, music, language, and community, Garífuna heritage has been recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Our organization was founded to preserve this rich legacy, while addressing the evolving needs of our people in the United States and abroad. From its beginnings, the association has worked to unite Garífuna families, promote cultural pride, and support community well-being.
Through programs in education, health, arts, and cultural preservation, we continue to honor the strength of our ancestors while creating new opportunities for the next generations. What began as a small initiative to connect and uplift Garífuna voices has grown into a vibrant nonprofit dedicated to empowerment, advocacy, and the celebration of our heritage.

Our Vision
Our vision is to build a strong and thriving Garífuna community where culture, language, and traditions are preserved, celebrated, and passed on to future generations. We envision a future where Garífuna people have equitable access to education, health care, and opportunities that empower them to succeed while staying rooted in their heritage. Through unity, cultural pride, and community-driven initiatives, we strive to create spaces where our identity is honored, our voices are heard, and our people continue to flourish with dignity and resilience.
Mission
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
Our mission is to preserve, promote, and protect the Garífuna culture while supporting the well-being of our community. We are dedicated to providing programs and services that strengthen cultural identity, foster education, encourage healthy living, and create opportunities for economic and social empowerment. By engaging youth, supporting families, and collaborating with partners, we work to ensure that Garífuna traditions remain vibrant and that our community thrives both locally and globally.

Team
Dedication. Expertise. Passion.
At ALA, we believe that collaboration builds stronger communities. Our team sessions are spaces where members, volunteers, and leaders come together to share ideas, plan initiatives, and strengthen our mission. These sessions encourage open dialogue, creativity, and collective problem-solving, ensuring that every voice has a place at the table. Through teamwork, we foster unity, accountability, and a focused approach toward serving our community. Whether we are planning cultural events, supporting families, or creating new opportunities, our team sessions keep us connected, motivated, and aligned with our vision of preserving and empowering the Garífuna people.
